Premier Division rugby battles promise intrigue

2014-05-10 00:00

THERE is much to look forward to in today’s 3.30pm Fidelity Security Premier Division matches, as the fourth round throws up some intriguing battles that owe something to history in two cases, rookie challenger and champion in the other and Durban North derby time in the final fixture.

Over its 100-plus year history, how many students with Zululand roots have turned out for the UKZN Pietermaritzburg first XV? That’s one for the historians to think about. The Peter Booysen Sports Park, off Golf Road in Scottsville, is the venue for the UKZN Impi clash with Zululand Rhinos and both will be desperate to get a first win under the belt in this basement battle.

The Maritzburg Collegians and Durban Collegians rivalry goes back forever, it seems, and the PMB lads will be the underdogs when they host their coastal cousins at Woodburn. Unbeaten Durban are second by a whisker on the log while PMB have one win from three and will be looking for a heartening showing.

Surprise log leaders Amanzimtoti will be determined to keep their dream start on a roll but the league debutants face an acid test when they host perennial champions College Rovers at Hutchison Park, while Riverside Sports Club is the arena in which home side Varsity College will be hoping to put a brake on Crusaders’ impressive run.

Fidelity Security Premier Division (home teams first, 3.30pm kick-off): UKZN Impi v Zululand Rhinos (PMB Varsity); PMB Collegians v Durban Collegians (Woodburn); Amanzimtoti v College Rovers (Hutchison Park); Varsity College v Crusaders (Riverside Sports Club). Reserves 2pm. First Division South (3.30pm): Harlequins v Hillcrest; Jaguars v Ballito; South Coast Warriors v Richards Bay. First Division North: Piet Retief v Vryheid (4pm); Pongola v Volksrust (3pm); Newcastle Highlanders 1A v Ladysmith Bulldogs (4pm); Sentraal v Newcastle Highlanders 1B (Dundee, 3pm).
