Premier League: Magpies, Spurs register wins

2012-09-24 00:00

NEWCASTLE — Newcastle kept a clean sheet for the first time in the English Premier League this season with a 1-0 victory over Norwich at St James’ Park yesterday.

The result also spoiled Norwich manager Chris Hughton’s return to Newcastle for the first time since he was fired by the Magpies in 2010.

Demba Ba scored the winner, his third goal in two games, when he turned Hatem Ben Arfa’s pass into the centre of the goal from close range in the 19th minute.

Norwich striker Steve Morison gave away a penalty late in the first half with a poor tackle on Mike Williamson, but Papiss Cisse missed the resultant spot kick.

Norwich pressed for an equaliser in the second half, but failed to find the net and remain winless this campaign.

Meanwhile, Tottenham scored two goals in a three-minute span in the second half to earn a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers in the English Premier League yesterday to give manager André Villas-Boas his first home victory at the club.

Bobby Zamora had given the visitors the lead in the 33rd minute, but Tottenham equalised through an own goal by Alejandro Faurlin in the 59th minute.

In-form striker Jermain Defoe then secured the win for the hosts in the 62nd, tapping in a rebound from close range. After a poor start, Spurs now have two wins in a row.
