THE Pietermaritzburg Road Traffic Inspectorate unit was among the winners at the Premier’s Service Excellence Awards held in Durban last night.

The awards honour provincial departments that have strived to offer not only excellent service, but also those that provide those services with compassion and dedication to the public and the public service.

The RTI unit was presented with a silver award for efficiency and dedicated service to the communities it serves.

Other silver award winners were Khanyanjalo School in the education category and uMzinyathi Public Works district office. Bronze awards went to Sports and Recreation in Amajuba, Arts and Culture in the western region, Treasury’s IT unit, Operation Hlasela in the safety category and Social Development’s Chatsworth office.

The eThekwini water department and the veterinary service in the Agriculture Department were awarded certificates of commemoration.

The evening’s big winner was the Manguzi Hospital in the uMkhanyakude District, which received the gold award.

Premier Zweli Mkhize said the awards were not just a pat on the back for provincial departments.

“This is to show that if you do good, somebody will notice.”

He called on public servants to remember that they rendered a necessary service to the public and their dedication and excellence were an indication of a government that cared for its public.
