Presenter’s shock death

2010-08-19 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Two letters were next to the body of actress and quiz presenter Fiona Coyne (45) when her domestic found her on the bed in her Fish Hoek home yesterday morning.

The letters were addressed to her mother, Dolly Coyne, and her domestic, Zoleka Shumani.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Knapp told Die Burger yesterday that no foul play is suspected.

“A postmortem will be performed,” he said.

A reliable source told Die Burger that Coyne tried to commit suicide last week.

Coyne’s 22-year marriage broke down about eight months ago.

She was especially well known for presenting the South African version of The Weakest Link quiz show, where participants were often subjected to her wit and razor-sharp tongue.

There was a counsellor at Coyne’s house yesterday to support her family and friends, including her brother, Charles, and her mother, Dolly.

“The world is a poorer place without her,” said a clearly upset Charles Coyne. “She was a remarkable and compassionate person.”

He said their brother Bruce, from Pretoria, is deeply shocked by her sudden death.

“We’re just waiting for him to calm down before finalising his travel arrangements.”

Mario Brierava, Coyne’s neighbour, said her death is a “huge shock”.

“She was a very friendly person, not at all like she pretended to be on The Weakest Link.”
