The eighth Caltex Isicathamiya High Schools’ Choir Competition will take place at the Playhouse Opera Theatre in Durban today, with 60 choirs from Durban Metro and KwaZulu-Natal expected to compete in this youth-based music extravaganza. There are cash prizes, a computer, trophies and certificates to be won, as well as lots of giveaways.

The event aims to preserve, promote and develop the traditional music and dance style of isicathamiya at a grassroots level.

Popular Ukhozi FM DJ and SABC sports presenter Joe Hudla will compere the event for the second time. Veteran isicathamiya group Zulu Messengers, who are from Empangeni, will entertain the audience while Eric “Coolfire” Radebe will rekindle ancestors by burning traditional incense (impepho) at the opening of the show. Acclaimed guitarist Madala Kunene will also entertain. Inquiries: 073 301 6740.
