Prestbury, Hilton left in the dark

2011-05-30 00:00

HILTON residents are fed up with Msunduzi Municipality following yet another round of random power cuts that plagued the suburb yesterday morning and again in the the evening.

Random power cuts were also experienced in Prestbury and some parts of the central business district, but the Comrades Marathon was not affected.

The Witness was inundated with telephone calls from Hilton and Prestbury residents who complained about the power cuts.

Hilton residents said they were unable to watch the marathon on television.

The outages left them in the dark for close more than an hour after 6 pm.

Prestbury residents said the power cuts started at around 4 am. They said the power would be come on for a few minutes before going off again.

A Hilton resident said, “This is disgusting … We cannot live like this, we are tired of this municipality. We have to do something and close this municipality down.”

Many callers were also irked by the fact that they could not get answers from the municipality as the emergency numbers rang unanswered.

Attempts to get a clear comment from the municipality as to the cause of the power cuts were unsuccessful at the time of going to print.

However, The Witness learnt from a senior electricity manager, who did not want to be named, that the municipality has no idea what caused the power cuts.

He said, however, that the outages were not the result of power switches tripping at sub-stations.
