Prestigious cycle race for PMB

The inaugural Intaka Tech World’s View Challenge is less than two weeks away. The start will take place on Saturday, February 2, and includes five one-day cycling events to finish on Thursday, February 7.

Pietermaritzburg Mayor Zanele Hlastwayo and city manager Rob Haswell jointly welcomed the event.

“Our city is well known as the birthplace of great international sports events, such as the Comrades and Dusi marathons and the Midmar Mile. Now we are taking steps to establish our city as a cycling capital.”

The event is open to all road cyclists and is wonderful opportunity for local cyclists to compete alongside the elite champions of international cycling.

The event comprises five individual races with five different routes, all starting and finishing in Alexandra Park. The number allowed to enter for the five individual races differs, with 3 000 places available for races one and two but only 1 000 for races three, four and five. The details are as follows:

• February 1: event registration from 9.30 am to 4 pm, with a welcome dinner in the evening.

•Race one starts at 11.30 am on February 2 with the 111,6-km route from PMB-Richmond-Camperdown-PMB.

•Race two starts at 9.30 am on February 3 and the distance is 113,4 km, with the route going from PMB Street Circuit-Thornville-Two Laps of Polyshorts Circuit-Four Laps of PMB Street Circuit.

•Race three starts at 9.30 am on February 4 and the distance is 108 km, with the route going from PMB-New Hanover-Wartburg-PMB.

•Rest day on February 5 with seminar series with UCI ProTour team riders and support staff.

•Race four starts at 9.30 am on February 6 and the distance is 133,5 km with the route going from PMB-Camperdown-Thornville-Richmond-Camperdown-Thornville-PMB.

•Race five starts at 9.30 am on February 7 and the distance is 108 km with the route going from PMB-Edendale-Taylors Holt-Cedara-PMB.

There are two categories that one can enter in this prestigious event. There is a series for veteran men and the main section for open men. The veteran men’s series will run on a points system over the five individual races. The Intaka Tech World’s View Challenge has a prize purse of R650 000 up for grabs.
