Prickled pink: Rare pale porcupine in good health after hunter’s trap

GEORGE — Penny, an albino porcupine that survived a hunter’s trap, is delighting vistors to a southern Cape wildlife park.

Tammy Moult, spokesperson for the Cango Wildlife Ranch at Oudts­hoorn, said a farmer phoned and asked for help after finding the injured animal.

Penny had a severe head wound that exposed a large part of her skull and the ranch staff were not sure that she could


But after months of treatment, the porcupine is left with only a scar.

Her albino colouring — white quills and hair, with pink skin and red eyes — is very rare, according to Moult.

Now, pale Penny seems on the point of mating with Prickles, an ordinary black porcupine brought to the centre after his mother was shot.

Porcupines are regarded by farmers as pests because they often destroy crops in their search for food.
