Prison officer behind bars for fraud

2011-06-29 00:00

A CORRECTIONAL Services officer employed at Sevontein Prison, who systematically stole more than R1,1 million from the department between 2002 and 2007, has been sentenced to eight years’ direct imprisonment by regional court magistrate Chris van Vuuren.

At the time 55-year-old Vumeluyise Vincent Ngcobo of Elandskop was the officer responsible for prisoners’ cash and for submitting claims for work done by prisoners.

He was found guilty of committing 69 counts of fraudulently stealing R1 126 026.

Van Vuuren said corruption, fraud and theft involving government funds are “rampant” in South Africa.

He said Ngcobo’s actions involved “meticulous planning” and that he had shown no remorse and steadfastly refused to acknowledge his wrongdoing.

Van Vuuren took into account Ngcobo’s advanced age and that he is a first offender as well as the fact that he has “lost everything” through an application brought by the Asset Forfeiture Unit.
