POLOKWANE — With 160 000 inmates, South Africa has the biggest prison population in Africa and the ninth biggest in the world.

Correctional Services Minister S’bu Ndebele told a function on Friday 30% are awaiting trial.

Every month, 23 000 people are released, but another 25 000 enter the system.

He said increasing numbers of women are in prison for killing their partners. In some cases, their daughters are with them in jail, having helped to commit the murder. In many cases, the men had been abusive. — Media24.
