Probe into illegal dumping of sludge in Willowton area

2014-08-07 00:00

THE Msunduzi Municipality is investigating the illegal dumping of a thick sludge in the Willowton industrial area.

Msunduzi citizens, who have become environmentally conscious since the launch of the city’s clean-up campaign, drew The Witness’s attention to the sludge dam that has formed.

Some who work in Chesterfield Road raised concerns about the thick substance being dumped in the area. There are concerns about whether the substance is toxic. The workers say that judging by the amount of muck, the culprits could be one company or several. The trucks probably go in early in the morning, late at night or during the day when they are inside their factories, they say.

The workers want the municipality, as part of its clean-up campaign, to target the illegal dumpsite. They called for strict monitoring of the area so that the culprits can be caught, and for the sludge to be analysed to ensure that it is not toxic and not seeping into the water table.

The Witness alerted the municipality, which is investigating. The municipality in turn has notified the KZN Department of Environment Affairs.
