Procession for PMB officer’s funeral

2008-06-16 00:00

Motorists have been asked to exercise patience today if they come across the funeral procession of Msunduzi Traffic Officer Desmond Hanson (39), who was killed on Wednesday last week as he tried to stop an errant taxi driver.

Hanson’s funeral will take place at the Gathering of the Believers Church on the corner of Washington and Emily roads at 10 am today.

Traffic officers will march from their Washington Road base to the church in a procession with the coffin at 8.30 am. After the funeral, a cavalcade will proceed through town past the city hall to the Mountain Rise Cemetery for a private cremation ceremony.

The taxi driver had allegedly skipped two red lights when Hanson tried to stop him in Peter Kerchhoff (Chapel) Street. The vehicle subsequently smashed into a lamppost, and the 33-year-old driver was arrested.

Hanson was rushed to St Anne’s Hospital, where he died four hours later.

The incident has sparked outrage and sorrow among members of the community, many of whom have left messages of support for Hanson’s family and expressions of their anger at his death, on the Witness website.

Former mayor Siphiwe Gwala yesterday paid tribute to Hanson, who was his bodyguard while he was in office in the 1990s.
