Promise to bring stability

2012-12-14 00:00

THE newly elected mayor of Nkandla, Arthur Thamsanqa Ntuli, this week committed himself to bringing back stability and clean governance.

Ntuli said that from now on, opportunities would be given to people on the basis of their ability to deliver.

He was elected at the new council’s first meeting on Tuesday, following the Inkatha Freedom Party’s by-election victory in Ward 4 on December 5.

The victory took the number of IFP seats in the 27-member council to 14, meaning that the shaky NFP-ANC coalition (with 13 seats) is a thing of the past.

Ntuli said the new council would aim to achieve a clean audit and it would appoint a new chief financial officer.

The IFP’s takeover would bring stability to the municipality.

There would be no room for cadre deployment, and tenders, positions and jobs would be awarded on merit, irrespective of party affiliation, Ntuli added.

The IFP’s Thembinkosi Nxumalo won Ward 4 in Nkandla with 54,9% of the vote.

The seat was left vacant after the death of ANC councillor Bongumenzi Ngcobo, who was also the speaker of the municipality.

After losing the seat in Ward 4, the ANC is now left with 10 seats, while the National Freedom Party has three.
