Promotion pressure off Cosmos after win

2011-03-23 00:00

JOMO Cosmos are only one point away from returning to the PSL.

This came after they registered a 2-1 victory over FC AK in their National First Division (NFD) Inland Stream clash at Eldorado Park, Gauteng on Sunday.

Former Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United forwards Norman Smith and Senegalese Souleymane Diabate scored for Ezenkosi, who are looking to bounce back to the elite league after suffering relegation last season.

Midfielder Andries Mosehle, who lost his arm as a baby in a car accident in 1992, caught the eye, mesmerising the Cosmos defence with his trickery and skill.

He scored a cracker to pull one back for FC AK, but it was too late as the visitors had wrapped it up.

Commenting on the Cosmos website, owner Jomo Sono said: “This was a good performance from the boys. At least the pressure will be a bit off, as we now need only a point from the three remaining games.”

Cosmos’s next game is against Black Leopards at Makhulong Stadiym on April 16. Ezenkosi are likely to face Coastal Stream leaders Bay United in the play-offs final, who consolidated their top spot by playing in a goalless draw away to Carara Kicks.

Port Elizabeth-based Bay United currently enjoy a six-point lead over second-placed Thanda Royal Zulu, whose bad run continued as they suffered a 1-0 defeat by Blackburn Rovers in Eastern Cape.

Thanda, who boast over five ex-PSL players and are coached by veteran Professor Ngubane, have registered a five-match winless run.

Thanda will now battle with Carara Kicks and African Warriors, both from the Free State, for a place in the second play-offs.

Due to the Fifa weekend and the Nedbank Cup fixtures, the NFD action will resume on April 16.
