Prosecutor in court over bribes

LADYSMITH detectives arrested a 37-year-old public prosecutor at the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court for corruption yesterday.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker, it is alleged that the prosecutor was working at a traffic offences court when he approached traffic offenders waiting to address the court for a reduction of their traffic fines.

“The prosecutor allegedly asked three of the offenders for cash in exchange for removing their names from the court roll.

“The three reported the matter to the police and the prosecutor was arrested,” Naicker said.

He was charged for three counts of corruption and three counts of defeating the ends of justice and is due to appear in Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court soon.

Last month the Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime Unit arrested a public prosecutor at Estcourt for corruption after a trap was set with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.

Apparently, he withdrew charges against a person charged with drunk driving before he could appear in court.

The prosecutor allegedly stamped and signed the man’s bail slip and instructed him to collect his bail refund and pay him R1 000 to finally quash the case.

The drunk driving suspect contacted officials, who arrested the prosecutor after he had collected the money.
