Prosecutor in dock for rape

2013-05-30 00:00

A PUBLIC prosecutor from a small Midlands magistrate’s court made a brief appearance in the dock yesterday on charges of rape, corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

The prosecutor’s name is being withheld until he pleads on the rape charge. He was remanded until tomorrow for his bail application after being arrested on Tuesday.

It is alleged that on May 23 the victim, aged 23, was at the magistrate’s court with her boyfriend when the prosecutor approached her. He allegedly called her to his office and sexually assaulted her. She immediately reported the alleged rape to her boyfriend and a case was opened. It is also alleged that when the prosecutor heard that a case had been opened, he approached the victim and offered her R3 000 to withdraw the case.

The victim reported this to the investigating officer. Cases of corruption and of defeating the ends of justice were then also opened.
