Protea Road: residents welcome robots plan

2011-10-18 00:00

MARBURG residents have welcomed the announcement by Hibiscus Coast Municipality (HCM) of the installation of a new set of robots on Protea Road at an intersection near Cashbuild Building.

HCM spokesperson Simon Soboyisa said the reason for the new installation is to curb the number of accidents at the intersection and to ensure the safety of residents of wards 17 and 18.

Motorists find it difficult to get on to the main road from the T-junction as traffic on both sides of the road is always busy.

Cohen Pillay, a motorist, said: “I am late for campus every morning due to the traffic build-up there. No matter what time you leave it is always busy so this is definitely good news.”

The project started at the end of September and is expected to be completed late in November or early in December.

The total cost of the project, including professional fees, is R681 000. Soboyisa said a municipal delegation led by speaker Ronnie Nair with human settlement and infrastructure portfolio chairperson Piet Rademeyer, human settlement director Simphiwe Nikelo and road and storm water manager Gert Brits conducted a routine check-up and site visit.

“The contractor showed the municipal delegation the newly constructed trenches and construction plan of the whole project. The department of human settlement and infrastructure has promised to work around the clock and conduct routine check-ups to ensure that this project will be fully completed come December 2011,” Soboyisa said.
