Protea power: Boy hits 273 off 74 balls

2012-08-02 00:00

IF your dad has a protea farm and you practise among the proteas, it is perhaps not surprising that you can score 273 runs in an innings.

Pretoria schoolboy Dirk Thuynsma (13) hit this heap of runs off just 74 balls in a school match on Tuesday.

Dirk has been playing cricket since he was six, and his father has cleared a field on the protea farm near Cullinan, Gauteng to make a practice pitch.

He hit 28 fours and 25 sixes on his way to 273, even slamming the ball into the scorekeepers’ box.

“The most important thing is to concentrate and not to lose your head when you start to score so many runs,” Dirk explained yesterday.

He plans to follow in the footsteps of his hero, Proteas batsman Francois “Faf” du Plessis.

His coach said Dirk isn’t scared to play shots, and when his technique is right, the runs flow.

“I often have to take him off to give the other boys a chance,” said Tommie Rademeyer.
