Proteas have enough young bowling depth, says lions coach Nosworthy

CAPE TOWN — Highveld Lions coach, Dave Nosworthy, says the Proteas have enough bowling depth in the fast bowling department.

Proteas bowling coach Allan Donald expressed his concern a couple of months ago about the lack of depth in the South African bowling line-up. Donald was especially worried about what the Proteas would do if Dale Steyn and Morné Morkel were to get injured.

However, Nosworthy believes the sudden rise to prominence of the Lions’ Pumelela Matshikwe and the Titans’ Marchant de Lange proves that the country has more than enough fast-bowling depth.

Matshikwe (27) and De Lange (21) have been included in the South African “A” team for a four-day tour match against Australia in Potchefstroom next week.

They have been impressive in the SuperSport series thus far this season. Matshikwe is currently the competition’s leading wicket taker, with 19 wickets in only three games. De Lange has taken six wickets in two games, but has impressed the selectors with his pace. “Pumie actually reminds me a lot of Steve Elworthy (former Protea swing bowler), because he also developed quite late,” Nosworthy told the Beeld newspaper. “He has been playing club cricket for a while, but has only really started taking the game seriously over the last two seasons.

“He’s a very mature young man with a good head on his shoulders. Different to the rest of the country’s promising young fast bowlers — who gets pushed in too early — he has already learnt his game and is in an excellent physical condition.” Unlike Donald, Nosworthy is not worried about the future of SA’s bowlers once Steyn and Morkel are not there.

“Everyone started panicking when Garth le Roux and Mike Procter reached the twilight of their careers, but a young fast bowler by the name of Allan Donald put his hand up. The same happened when Donald retired a number of years later, but Steyn suddenly started making progress. Just like that there will be more guys that come to the fore when Dale and Morkel aren’t playing any more,” he said.

Nosworthy also believes young fast bowlers like the Lions’ Ethan O’Reilly and Craig Alexander, and the Titans’ Hardus Viljoen are all bowlers who could push for higher honours in the years to come.
