Protest: ‘Save the Bok’ e-mail calls for action

2008-11-03 00:00

After recent threats against the Springbok emblem, a call has been made to rugby supporters to “Save that Bok”. An e-mail being circulated appeals to “true Springbok rugby supporters” to dress in Springbok colours on December 1.

The origins of the e-mail are not known, but it describes the event as a “protest action”.

Recipients of the e-mail have responded positively to the appeal. Rowan White of Pietermaritzburg said it is a good idea to wear the emblem in protest against its removal.

“The Springbok has been around for almost a century,” he said. He disputes claims that the emblem represents apartheid, saying it is older than apartheid.

“December 1 is the day to make ourselves heard and speak out for something that can’t,” reads the e-mail. Recipients are also encouraged to forward the e-mail to the media to ensure that the event is publicised.

“We need people of all walks of life (black and white together) to participate so please send this to everyone you know.”
