Protest: Student stone police cars

POLICE used rubber bullets to disperse more than 300 students who were protesting outside the Mangosuthu University of Technology in uMlazi yesterday.

The students are protesting over the increase in tuition and residence fees and the exclusion of some students on financial grounds.

Students threw stones at police officers who had been deployed outside the university to monitor the situation.

The protesters also intimidated other students and prevented them from attending lectures.

Police spokesman Superintendent Jay Naicker said the protesting students stoned police vehicles that were parked near the entrance of the university.

“Students became violent and started to stone police vehicles.

“Rubber bullets were used to disperse the crowd,” he said.

No injuries were reported.
