Protests continue as students wait for response

2011-02-04 00:00

STUDENT grievances remain unresolved at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Midlands campuses and the students continued to protest yesterday.

For the past three days, students have totally shut down the university’s operations and have vowed to continue their protest until their lgrievances are addressed.

These largely revolve around issues of funding, accommodation and the exclusion of students.

While the protests have been relatively peaceful in the past two days, students burnt tires yesterday.

Student leaders were awaiting a formal response from the university yesterday, after meetings with management which began on Wednesday.

The Witness understands that the student representative council (SRC) was still locked in meetings until late yesterday, despite the promise of a response by the university by yesterdy.

SRC educational and transformation officer in the midlands, Cedrick Ngubane said the council has made headway on some of the issues.

However, nothing had been sent to it in black and white, Ngubane added.
