Proved: SA's slow Internet

2014-04-29 00:00

SOUTH Africa's broadband speed for land lines are on average 5,2 megabites per second (Mbps) compared to the international average of 17,7 Mbps, reports the IT website MyBroadband.

These download speeds were measured in the latest Ookla-index.

Ookla is an American company that measures Internet broadband speeds worldwide and solves speed constraints.

South Africaï¾’s average mobile broadband speed is 6,4 Mbps, compared to the international average of 7,7 Mbps.

This means South Africa remains one of very few countries where land-line speeds are slower than mobile broadband speeds, and the slow pace of renewal at Telkom compared to the competition-driven private sector is blamed for this stagnant status quo.

The lack of renewal for local fixed line users means that most Telkom clients still use ADSL at 10 Mbps, or slower.
