Provincial Three-Day Competition: Inland make great start against Easterns

2013-04-05 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Inland cricket team enjoyed an excellent first day of the CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition match against Easterns at Willowmoore Park in Benoni yesterday.

At the close, Inland were on 326 for six in their first innings after 94 overs had been bowled in the day.

The innings was built around partnerships of 55, 92 and 78 for the first, fourth and fifth wickets, while 44 had been realised for the seventh wicket at stumps.

The top performers were first-wicket SJ Erwee, who hit 80 in a three-hour stint that included six fours and two sixes.

Coming in at number five, Mathew Hulett made a responsible 81 off 141 deliveries that was studded with nine boundaries and two maximums.

Inland captain Kyle Nipper, the quickest scoring batsman of the three who made fifty-plus, not surprising considering the platform that had been laid, was unbeaten on 73 off just 85 balls that was highlighted by 11 fours.

In hindsight, Easterns captain Tumelo Bodibe might have reversed his decision to ask Inland to bat after he had won the toss.

Inland coach Grant Morgan’s side have certainly made a great start in their quest to win the match outright and in so doing leapfrog above KN Coastal on the three-day log. The T20 match takes place on Sunday.

KZN Inland 1st inn 326/6 after 94 overs (N Hendrie 31, S Erwee 80, M Hulett 81, K Nipper 73*).
