Provincial Three-Dayers: day one leaves KZN teams with lots to do

2013-02-22 00:00

THE outcomes of the first day’s play in the CSA Provincial Three-day Competition matches at the Maritzburg and Chatsworth ovals yesterday have left the KwaZulu-Natal teams with much to do.

Northerns won the toss and elected to bat at the PMB Oval, and at 23 for two, they must have wondered whether they had made the right decision. But a 120-run stand for the third wicket set up the Pretoria lads for a solid first-innings total of 310.

Captain Pieter Malan led from the front with a 72 that gave backbone, Graeme van Buuren (75) and wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen (52) added weight, and Shaun von Berg (26) and Jeandre Jumat (37) made handy contributions.

In-form opening bowler Ruhan Pretorius continued his purple patch with four for 59 from 19 overs and was aided by Inland skipper Kyle Nipper’s three for 68 in 18 overs of left-arm spin. Wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi took two for 94 off 30 overs.

Divan van Wyk and SJ Erwee will resume Inland’s first-innings reply with the home province’s total reading 43 for the loss of one wicket, the on-song Nic Hendrie having been dismissed for a rare duck in the third over.

An unusual 93 overs were bowled in Durban by the time the inevitable bad light brought play to a close, leaving North West in the pound seats against KZN Coastal.

At the Chatsworth Oval, Coastal chose to bat, but were rattled out for 121, Michael Alexander top-scoring with 26, while Kyle Hodnett (25) and wicketkeeper Mathew Boote (20) also got into the twenties.

North West’s Vusumuzi Masebuko led the rout with four for 21 in only nine overs.

North West scored at a brisk pace to reach 119 for one at stumps and are well set to consolidate on day two with Kagiso Rapulana on 56 and Thando Bula not out 45.

In PMB: Northerns 1st inn 310 (P Malan 72, G van Buuren 75, J Jumat 37; R Pretorius 4-59, K Nipper 3-68). KZN Inland 1st inn 43/1. In Durban: KZN Coastal 1st inn 121 (M Alexander 26; V Masebuko 4-21). North West 1st inn 119/1 (K Rapulana 56*, T Bula 45*).
