Public Kavadi: Devotees in show of faith

2011-01-24 00:00

THE annual public kavadi saw hundreds of devotees from the Sri Siva Soobramoniar and Marriamen Temples display their faith in Lord Muruga, the most popular Hindu god, with a procession through thre streets of central Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

Ritesh Rajbally showed his faith by hanging suspended with metal hooks attached to the skin on his back, arms and legs in a chariot as it proceeded along Langalibelele Street, into Thomas Streets, down Church Street, into William Street and back to the temples.

The procession took nearly an hour.

After the pierced hooks had been removed, Rajbally said he felt no pain.

“Murugu” means “beauty”. Hindus believe that where there is beauty, love shines; where there is love, truth sparkles; and when one seeks the truth, one is liberated.

It is said that Lord Muruga taught the Indian language Tamil to Saint Agasthiar.

Lord Muruga Himself sat as the leader for the academy of poets (Tamil Sangam) in Madurai (Tamil Nadu) and the language flourished as a result. Accordingly, He is called the God of Tamil.
