Public warned of ‘MTN winner’ SMS

2010-07-06 00:00

RECIPIENTS of an MTN SMS scam yesterday warned the public not to disclose any personal details without first verifying the source of the SMS.

Pietermaritzburg resident Roxanne Francis received an SMS yesterday morning saying, “Congratulations. Your mobile number has been randomly picked among the lucky winners of the Fifa 2010 award. You won R152 000. [Reference number]. Phone 078 612 4809 for your prize.”

Her co-worker, Stanley Engelbrecht, received a similar SMS that said he would win R860 000 if he phoned a number (different to the one received by Francis) and quoted the reference number that appeared in the SMS.

On phoning the number, Francis and Engelbrecht were told that their details had to be verified and that they should call back in a couple of minutes.

When they phoned back, they were told that they had indeed won the said amount of money and were asked for their personal details and whether they wanted the money delivered to their physical address or deposited into their bank account. They were also told that in order to receive their prize, they had first to buy R900 worth of prepaid MTN airtime and phone a specified phone number back with the relevant security codes.

This made Engelbrecht and Francis suspicious and they notified the police about the scam.

MTN’s senior publicity and communications manager, Bridget Bhengu, said MTN notifies the public of all competitions that it is running through the media, and that anything not publicised should be verified with MTN.
