Publicity House upgrade approved

IF you go to the city hall, you will find your way blocked at various points by a bevy of council workers — cleaning the floors, polishing or painting the balustrades.

Executive committee members did not mind walking through an obstacle course yesterday to get to the council chamber. After years of neglect, they said it was wonderful to see the balustrades being cleaned and the light bulbs replaced.

Councillor Bill Lambert thanked the city hall working committee for driving the initiative and ensuring the work was properly done. He said the initiative was yet another positive development for the city.

Exco also agreed to the renovation of the dilapidated and neglected Publicity House at the corner of Langalibalele Street and Chief Albert Luthuli Street.

With the brand new Tourism Hub just about completed, the city hall’s current clean-up and the soon-to-be paved and re-landscaped Albert Luthuli Street, Publicity House would have been a blight in the area.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said they had applied to the Co-operative Governance Department for funding and were told they could use the R2,4 million set aside for the Msimang Museum project in Edendale. Nkosi said the museum project was delayed by design problems.

The project involves upgrading the Msimang family homestead, a historic building, while maintaining its design integrity.

The Msimangs were a pioneering Pietermaritzburg family. The two brothers were founding members of the ANC.
