Pumas’ Phelan makes five changes

2013-08-23 00:00

PUMAS coach Santiago Phelan, hit by injury and poor form, has made five changes to his starting line-up ahead of tomorrow’s Rugby Championship international against the Springboks in Mendoza.

Three of his world-class players — number eight and captain Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe, former Sharks flyhalf Juan Martin Hernandez and veteran lock Patricio Albacete — have been sidelined by injury.

The influential Lobbe missed the Soweto clash at the weekend when the Pumas were beaten 73-13, while both Hernandez and Albacete left the field at Soccer City with injuries.

Hernandez, who played for the Sharks in 2009, is replaced by Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino at fullback.

Bath’s Horacio Agulla will be preferred to Juan Imhoff on the wing.

The Pumas will be stronger in the front row with Leicester Tigers specialist loosehead Marcos Ayerza, who missed the Soweto Test, returning from injury.

This allows Juan Figallo to move across to his preferred position on the tighthead.

Phelan will start with a new second row as Julio Farias Cabello and Mariano Galarza take over from Albacete and Manuel Carizza.

Bok coach Heyneke Meyer is wary of the Puma challenge: “The Pumas will have a passionate crowd behind them, and after what happened last week, I am sure they will be playing with a lot of emotion.”

The international kicks off at 9.10 pm tomorrow and Steve Walsh is the referee.

15 Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino, 14 Gonzalo Camacho, 13 Marcelo Bosch, 12 Felipe Contepomi (captain), 11 Horacio Agulla, 10 Nicolás Sánchez, 9 Martín Landajo, 8 Leonardo Senatore, 7 Juan Manuel Leguizamón, 6 Pablo Matera, 5 Mariano Galarza, 4 Julio Farías Cabello, 3 Juan Figallo, 2 Eusebio Guiñazú,1 Marcos
