Punched’ gang strikes in Mkondeni

2014-02-18 00:00

A GANG of robbers has struck again after being driven off by a shopkeeper who punched one of them in the face in a previous robbery attempt.

Yesterday, the robbers — who police believe are the same gang — struck at Tela Flow Scrap metals in Mkondeni, two weeks after Akhadar Khalid punched a gunman, and chased him and his accomplices off with a stick from his Save-O-Matic store in Old Greytown Road.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said yesterday’s incident occurred at around noon when three men went into Tela Flow Scrap metals in Halstead Road in Mkondeni and held up a 46-year-old employee in his office. “The suspects, all armed with firearms, forced him to the floor and demanded money, and took R16 000 in cash from the safe,” he said.

He said they then removed the computer system that operates the CCTV video footage of the premises, and a BlackBerry cellphone and a laptop, and fled from the premises. The employee was not harmed.

Zwane said police are investigating a case of armed robbery.

He said the victim reported that he only saw the suspects fleeing on foot. “Whether or not a getaway vehicle was used is unconfirmed at this stage. Police are continuing with their investigation surrounding the incident and there have been no arrests,” said Zwane.

On the previous incident, Zwane said there was no new information regarding this incident.
