Pupil collapses in rugby match

A SCHOOLBOY is fighting for his life in Grey’s Hospital after collapsing during a rugby match yesterday.

The under-14 player from Greytown High School had been playing an away match against Voortrekker High School at Carter High School.

He collapsed at about 5 pm.

Carter High School principal Ashwin Ramgoolam confirmed that the player had collapsed during a game and that he was being monitored by doctors.

“At this stage doctors don’t know whether or not it was [due to] a pre-existing condition,” he said.

“He is in a critical but stable condition,” Ramgoolam said, adding that the school would release a statement once it knew more about his condition.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics arrived on the scene and found a first-aid team doing cardio pulmonary resuscitation on the boy.

“The medics immediately started with advanced life support resuscitation, and managed to regain the heartbeat,” said Botha.

The boy was taken to hospital after being placed on a ventilator and immobilised.

When The Witness arrived at Grey’s Hospital, staff from the three schools were waiting outside the casualty ward. The boy’s name has not yet been released.

The incident follows similar occurrences in world sport in recent weeks, among them the collapse of Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba (24) during a FA Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur
