Pupil found with firearm in school

AN 18-year-old Grade 10 pupil from Leneria Secondary School made a brief appearance at the Phoenix Magistrate’s Court for the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Sandile Sishi was arrested on Thursday at about 9.30 am when he was allegedly found in possession of unlicensed firearm while at school in Phoenix.

Zwane said Sishi was in the exam room at the Leneria Secondary School in Phoenix when a teacher noticed that he looked suspicious.

“The pupil was taken to the office with his bag where he was searched. In his bag an unlicensed firearm loaded with eight rounds was found,” said Zwane.

Police were called and questioned the pupil about the firearm. Zwane said Sishi allegedly said the firearm belonged to his father and he had taken it from where it was kept at home.

The provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni appealed to lawful firearm owners to keep their firearms in their safes and to hide safe keys away from children.

Sishi was released on bail of R1 000 and will be back in court in December 5.

Department of Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said it was disappointing that pupils were still taking weapons to school and paid tribute to the teacher who discovered the weapon.

He added that pupils should learn that firearms are not toys, but they kill people when used.
