Pupil leaves hospital to score 8 As

HEATHER Secondary pupil Sheldon Moodley was determined to do well in his matric examinations and did not let a sore appendix discourage him from scoring eight distinctions.

Moodley, from Belfort, had to have his appendix removed days before his trial examinations in August. He missed writing the trials and feared it would prevent him from obtaining distinctions in the finals exams.

“I spent four days in hospital and missed out on trials. I was so worried, but worked even harder for the finals,” he said.

He said the matric year was challenging but having a supportive group of friends helped him get through.

“There was lots of hard work, but I also managed to have some fun. My matric ball was the highlight of my school year,” he said.

Sheldon said Maths is his favourite subject and that he was happy about getting a distinction for it. He intends studying Actuarial Science at the University of Cape Town.

His friend, Leandra Pather, also of Heather Secondary, was surprised she scored eight distinctions as she found both the Maths and Physics papers challenging.

A Sai devotee, Leandra said prayer and the support of her family got her through the exams.

She and family will celebrate her results at a special dinner party tomorrow.

Sherishka Nundkoomar of Howick received seven distinctions.

She said her favourite subject is Biology because she is fascinated by nature and the human anatomy.

She plans to study medicine at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine in Durban.
