Pupil stabs school’s star rugby player in tunnel

2012-03-20 00:00

A STAR rugby player at a northern KwaZulu-Natal school was seriously injured at the weekend when a fellow pupil attacked him with a knife before a rugby match.

The Vryheid High School first team player was apparently ambushed in the tunnel just before his team ran on to the field on Saturday.

He was stabbed twice in the back

He tried to block a third stab with his hand and was cut badly in the process.

He was rushed to hospital, where his muscles had to be re-attached to his hand. There is concern about the use of two of his fingers.

The victim was discharged from hospital yesterday and will recuperate at home for the rest of the week.

Mpilo Mthobisi Khoza (19) was arrested and charged in the local magistrate’s court with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The case has been postponed for further investigation and Khoza will appear in court again next month.

He was released on bail of R1 000.

The stabbing apparently stemmed from a classroom argument between the rugby player and the suspect.

The former had apparently reprimanded the latter for his attitude towards a female teacher and the language he used towards her.

The school yesterday referred inquiries to the governing body chairperson, Johan Coetzer, who said the incident, the first of its kind in his seven years on the governing body, was a great shock.

He could not comment further on the matter since the matter was sub judice.
