Pupils get awards for road safety project

2007-11-20 00:00

Pietermaritzburg-based NGO Gift of the Givers, in partnership with the Johannesburg Metro police, sponsored the Awards function.

A total of 730 medals were awarded to pupils, and 33 trophies to winning schools.

Gift of the Givers chairman Dr Imitiaz Sooliman said: “With the ever-increasing pedestrian deaths and the unacceptable motor vehicle accident rate in South Africa it is imperative that road safety principles are inculcated in our children at an early age, and followed through into early adulthood.”

Sooliman said: “Advice on drug and alcohol abstinence and safe pedestrian behaviour is paramount in today's society, to prevent hardship and grief through accidents that could have been prevented.

“Many further initiatives are in the pipeline,” he said.
