Puppy left in car: owner banned from Suncoast

2011-01-21 00:00

A 75-YEAR-OLD Durban North pensioner has been praised for alerting Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World security staff to the plight of an eight-week-old puppy left unattended in a car parked at the complex on Tuesday.

Suncoast staff rescued the pup which collapsed in the sweltering Durban temperatures.

Mike Dowsley, executive director of Suncoast said: “This was an incredible team effort. I applaud the Suncoast patron for her concern and am very proud of the swift actions of our security team which saw the puppy being rescued in the nick of time. We strongly condemn the actions of the owner of the animal.”

The witness, who wishes to remain unnamed, said she was leaving the complex around midday when she heard what sounded like an injured bird. “Upon closer inspection she saw the small puppy in a car parked in the area to the right of Suncoast’s main tollgate entrance. The animal had been left in the vehicle for nearly three hours as temperatures climbed on Tuesday,” said Dowsley.

A security staffer used special equipment to force the windows open. “On-site paramedics and the SPCA were called in to give medical attention to the pooch.”

Said the SPCA on its Facebook page: “A sincere word of thanks to Suncoast Casino staff who acted swiftly by contacting our inspector and forcing the window open. When our Inspector Dewar arrived they had dowsed pup in cool water and revived her. What super stars!”

Suncoast has banned the female owner from visiting the complex for 12 months. The SPCA is laying charges of animal cruelty against her.
