Put your rubbish out, but we can’t promise collection, ratepayers told

2010-06-04 00:00

PUT your rubbish out on the designated day, even though there is no guarantee that it will be collected.

That’s the word from the municipality as refuse collection in some parts of the city has come to a virtual standstill.

Asked why some streets have had their refuse removed while others in the same suburb haven’t, acting municipal manager Thokozani Maseko said he has scheduled a meeting with management about the matter.

He said refuse trucks are fitted with tracking devices that allow supervisors and managers to see what time a truck has left, which areas it covers, which areas were left out, how long it took to attend to refuse and so on, but this is not being done.

“Residents must still put out their refuse on the normal days of collection. We are a bit behind, but we are attending to the issue,” he said.

Ward councillors are now bearing the brunt of residents’ anger.

ANC ward councillor Les Naidoo said inconsistent refuse removal for the last two months has led to the South Road garden refuse dump becoming an eyesore.

DA ward councillor Dave Ryder said residents in his area dumped their rubbish at the Old Howick Road garden refuse site, which was eventually closed, but people continued to offload their uncollected rubbish outside the locked gates. After the site was reopened, people continued to dump waste along the perimeter of the site.

ANC ward councillor Mazwi Msimang said the turn-around strategy will take time to bear fruit.

“However, one can’t deny that there are challenges. There’s something that makes the staff at waste not want to work.”
