Q&A with Krijay Govender

2010-10-18 00:00

KRIJAY Govender, who has been in the comedy business since 1996, has been voted South Africa’s funniest woman and is the only professional female comedian in South Africa.

“It developed from working as an emcee and being an unemployed actress in Durbs. I auditioned to open for Russell Peters and I got it.”

With two awards from the South Africa Film and Television Awards (Safta) for directing Isidingo, Govender is an actress, comedian, playwright and director on screen and stage, and currently directs Rhythm City (e.tv).

A former Miss India SA and runner-up Miss India Worldwide, Govender also worked as a radio presenter and a columnist. A true all-rounder, she obtained a Masters in drama and a Masters in politics.

“[Drama and politics is] the same profession. It’s all about performance.”

We put her funny to the test:

What is your Monday morning survival guide?

Diet starts today ... again!

What are your comedy influences?

Politicians, kids and Julius (oops, he is covered by the first two).

What are your future plans?

To work more, travel more, laugh more and become president.

When you are president, what will be the first thing that you do?

Phone Helen Zille and gloat that I got there first. Then I will do what Barack Obama did to Hillary Clinton, I will hire her.

How do you catch a rabbit?

You don’t. You just apologise for it becoming a symbol of dumb tarts living in a mansion.

Reasons to be happy?

I live in potentially the best country on Earth.

Being a mother is like ...

being a bad rapper: you repeat the same line over and over again.

If you had to make a documentary on the South African presidency, what would the title be?

One nation, many wives: Why all the new South African presidents ditched their first ladies.

What’s the craziest thing a family member has ever said to you?

“So what Standard are you in this year?” My dad asked me that one morning at breakfast before I wrote my third-year university exams.

What have you always wanted to say to that annoying person next to you on a plane?

Of all the many people I constantly chat to on flights, I have never sat next to an annoying one. Oops, that actually makes me the annoying one, nè?

What you do you when you can’t find your “funny”?

Men and speedos are like …

a Chilean rescue mission: a rare but wonderful thing.

Three things that most people don’t know about you?

I have four markings on my baby finger (most people have three). I can line dance and I once worked as an actual cellphone on a street corner.

What does Isidingo mean to you?

My old job.
