Queen congratulates local couple on their platinum anniversary

2011-04-29 00:00

WHILE the world prepares to celebrate the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton, there are couples closer to home celebrating several decades of matrimony.

Local couple Ron and Joan Jolley reached their 70th year together, an occasion made even more special when a congratulatory card arrived from Buckingham Palace.

Grandparents to 14, the couple received a card signed personally by Queen Elizabeth a few days after their anniversary on April 12.

The card commemorating their platinum anniversary was arranged by two of their daughters living in the United Kingdom. It bears a picture of the queen and came in an envelope bearing the royal crest.

Ron Jolley (91) says he still believes his wife is the most wonderful woman in the world. Married in 1941, the Howick couple have seen their fair share of royal weddings.

Prince William’s wedding will be the biggest since that of his parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Charles and Diana’s wedding 30 years ago was commemorated with scores of mementoes, including specially minted coins.

Marion Nero was recently clearing out her cupboards when she came across one of them. The crown — worth a nominal five shillings — bears the faces of both Charles and Diana and is dated 1981, the year of their wedding.

“I didn’t even know I had it. My husband collected coins and I found it in his collection,” said 93-year-old Nero.

Nero has no idea what the coin’s monetary value would be today, but will pass it on to her children.
