Queiroz ‘to be named new Bafana coach’

2014-05-31 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Bafana Bafana’s friendly against the New Zealand All Whites was Gordon Igesund’s last match at the helm of the national team, according to reports.

Safa are set to announce the return of Carlos Queiroz as Bafana coach today.

The Safa executive will meet for their regular quarterly meeting in Johannesburg, where it is believed they will rubber-stamp the appointment of Queiroz, who will take up his duties from the beginning of August.

According to the Star website, Queiroz met with Safa president Danny Jordaan last month to finalise the terms of his coaching contract.

Mozambique-born Queiroz (61) will lead Iran at this year’s Soccer World Cup in Brazil, where they will compete in Group F alongside Argentina, Nigeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Queiroz was in charge of Portugal at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He previously took charge of Bafana Bafana between 2000 and 2002 where he helped the team qualify for the 2002 World Cup played in Japan and South Korea, but was given his marching orders under acrimonious circumstances after Bafana’s quarter-final exit from the 2002 African Nations Cup.

Queiroz’s record as Bafana coach reads: played 24, won 10, drew 8, lost 6.

The coach was subsequently snapped up by Sir Alex Ferguson as his assistant coach at Manchester United, and went on to win three league titles and a Uefa Champions League while at Old Trafford.
