Quick reaction to theft at police station

2014-10-18 00:00

THE police themselves became victims of crime when offices at the Chatsworth police station were burgled this week.

The petty theft in a place where you would least expect it, drew a massive response from police top brass who quickly assembled a multi-member task team.

Yesterday the crack team identified a police officer and a civilian who they suspect may be responsible for pilfering cash from a safe.

“The cash was used to pay out claims and when the theft was discovered … On Thursday evening, a police official based at Chatsworth SAPS was detained on suspicion of having been involved in the theft. [Yesterday] a second suspect who is a civilian was also taken in for questioning …” police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.

KZN Police Commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni said harsh action would be meted out.

“We will not tolerate police officials being

involved in crime and will ensure that individuals responsible for the theft are dealt with harshly,” she said.
