Quiz: Kids' lit

2009-07-29 00:00

THIS afternoon sees the local round of the Kids Lit Quiz, the annual event that shows just how widely many South African children are reading. It takes place at Athlone Primary School from 4 pm to 7 pm, and the public are welcome to go along and watch — and be astonished. Entrance is free.

Kids Lit quizzes were started by New Zealander Wayne Mills who wanted to give children who maybe were not the stars of the sports field a chance to shine. Schools send teams to the quiz, and the team collaborates on its answers. The action is fast, furious and fun. Mills is in town to act as quiz master.

This year nine schools from Pietermaritzburg and the midlands are taking part, and the two top teams will go to Johannesburg for the South African finals.

Then, next Monday, the South African winner will join teams from China, Britain and New Zealand at Constitution Hill for the world final.

There will be two South African teams taking part — Saturday’s winner and Springvale School from outside Johannesburg who was last year’s winner.

All the teams will be given a tour of Constitution Hill by Judge Albie Sachs. John van de Ruit, author of the Spud novels, will give the opening address, and Gcina Mhlope will be on hand to wow the participants with her special brand of storytelling. To get a foretaste of the fun, go along to Athlone this afternoon.
