R100?000 reward offered for information on murder of Oribi couple

2015-04-29 00:00

POLICE are offering a reward of up to R100 000 to anyone who has information on the murder of the Oribi couple, Melvin (72) and Susan Lawson (72).

The couple were found burnt and stabbed in their home in Oribi in late February this year. Neighbours and family members of the couple said they suspected the murder was linked to outsiders wanting the houses of Oribi residents for themselves.

Neighbours, who spoke out when the story broke and would not be named, said it was thought that people were trying to scare residents so they would leave their homes empty, ready for them to be sold illegally. Oribi residents have said that there is a major problem with drugs and gangs in the area too and many were wary about continuing to live in Oribi.

The Department of Human Settlements is in the process of handing ownerships of the Oribi houses to Msunduzi, who will then process the title deeds so that the occupants can own the homes.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker yesterday said a reward of up to R100 000 has been offered by KwaZulu-Natal police to anyone who may have information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the murderers of the couple. He asked that anyone who may have information that can assist in the investigation contact the investigating officer Detective Warrant Officer Vusi Shabangu at 076 740 3091 or 033 845 7700 or Crime Stop at 086 001 0111.
