R1,2?mln graft case — man in court

2012-01-16 00:00

A 37-YEAR-OLD former employee of the NCT forestry co-operative made a brief appearance in the Pietermaritzburg magistrate’s court yesterday charged with defrauding his employer of more than R1,2 million. He was released on bail of R20 000.

The state alleges that between January 2007 and August 2011, Mahendra Venkatasamy Naidoo made Andrew Jones, a director, believe that he was paying numerous creditors and service providers to the total of R1 238 290.

The state did not oppose bail as he had co-operated with the investigation. He stated that as he has since left the company he will not interfere with witnesses and that he has handed over his travel documents.

He was ordered to report to police weekly and seek their permission to leave Pietermaritzburg.

State prosecutor Sally Singh told the court that the investigation is continuing. He will be back in court on February 29.
