R14 million beachfront revamp on track

THE Hibiscus Coast Municipality (HCM) says its three major projects, with a total cost of about R20 million, are progressing well.

The R14,54-million Princess Elizabeth Drive tidal surge revamp to Port Shepstone beachfront is under way with a completion date of November 18.

An artist’s impression of what the beach will look like is yet to be made. Simphiwe Nikelo, director of building and infrastructure, said the municipality only has an engineer’s sketch.

Municipal spokesperson Simon Soboyisa said an estimated 170 people are employed on the project.

Although he would not be drawn on whether the architectural plans encompass any new features, Soboyisa said the beachfront will become a much more enjoyable experience for locals.

Soboyisa said, “The intention is to reinstate the beachfront for use by fishermen and so that locals can enjoy family outings.

“The beach road will remain open during construction.

“However, road users will be inconvenienced. We appeal for their patience.”

Another project on HCM’s agenda is the Margate Sky Bridge, which is under construction on the R61 main road.

The professional fees amount to over R3,3 million and the development will be complete later this year.

Meanwhile a second contractor, Stedone, has been appointed to build 100 temporary top structures at the cost of over R4 million in the Masinenge slums clearance project.

Brainwave Projects was the first contractor appointed for the installation of roads and water.

Soboyisa added, “The contract is valued at R1 663 260.

“Minor snags have surfaced which will be rectified soon.”
