R16 mln released for PMB airport

AN amount of R16 million to commence the final stages of the Pietermaritzburg Airport upgrade was made available by KwaZulu-Natal Treasury, council heard yesterday.

Work is envisaged to commence in January next year.

This is the last instalment of the R40 million funding for the project, which started in 2010.

Project manager for the KZN Treasury Basil Karstadt made the announcement during yesterday’s Msunduzi Municipality’s Executive Committee (Exco) meeting.

Karstadt told Exco that of the amount, R6,5 million would be used for civil works and R9,5 million for building works.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said that the municipality had already received most of the grant for the expansion and upgrade of the airport.

“We have already used R24 million of the initial funding in the project since 2010.

“The remaining R16 million will be used for the final stages of the project,” said Nkosi.

He said that some of the money would be used for the expansion of the apron, where planes park after off-loading passengers.

“The rest of the funds would used for the expansion of the terminal building, which would mean that there would be enough space for the passengers waiting to board the aircraft,” he added.

The airport would also see an expansion of the taxiway, and improved storm water drainage would also be included in the upgrade.
