R1,7 mln budget for a new Alexandra Park bandstand

MSUNDUZI Municipality is in the process of reinstating the Alexandra Park bandstand structure.

The structure, which was erected at the Oval in Alexandra Park in 1892, collapsed after a large tree fell onto it during a heavy storm in January 2009.

In the executive committee (Exco) meeting yesterday, it was agreed that the bandstand should be constructed in a manner similar to the one in Church Street.

Previously Exco recommended that a reserve of R1 750 000 be set aside to rebuild the bandstand. The costs would be recovered by the insurance section that engaged assessors to investigate the bandstand’s collapse.

The strategic management committee resolved that the savings realised from the insurance payout for the reinstatement of the damaged structure be directed to the revitalisation of Alexandra Park.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said the insurance section indicated that reinstating the bandstand to its original unit serves no useful purpose in recent time and even if it’s replaced it will still remain underutilised.

But Amafa, a statutory body in terms of the KZN Heritage Act, did not agree to the proposal, saying it should be reinstated to match its original state.

“We thought reinstating it would be good, as it is a tourism structure for the city. We are in the process of completing the application and it will be submitted to Amafa soon,” Nkosi said.

He said taxpayers’ money would not be used, as the municipality has insurance on its buildings. Once Amafa approves it, the construction will commence.

According to city archives, the Alexandra Park bandstand was believed to be the only one of its kind in the country.
