R200 mln for hospital

2014-11-14 00:00

HOSPITALS across KZN are facing a variety of crippling challenges including staff shortages, aging car fleets and broken vital equipment.

This is contained in the Provincial Overview report of the hospitals in the province tabled at the legislature yesterday.

The oversight team drew the findings from 40 hospitals they visited.

The report revealed that of the 40 hospitals visited, 11 of them had acting CEOs although efforts were under way to fill those vacancies. Nurse managers reported a shortage of nursing staff, including professional nurses, and maternity wards were understaffed.

There were also reported shortages of medical doctors and radiographers.

In areas like uMzinyathi and uMkhanyakude districts, most hospital cars were old and were past the 300 000 km mileage.

“It was notable that in almost all hospital visited in the provinces, cardiotocographic machines (CTG), defibrillators and X-ray machines were a challenge. They were either inadequate, broken or of poor quality,” said the report.

There were also challenges with the Emergency Medical Services (EMS), although this is a centralised service not controlled by the hospitals.

It found that obstetric ambulances are not on site at all times and are used for other services that are not maternity related.

“Even though public health is facing challenges regarding adequacy of staff, it is worth noting that significant strides have been made …” the report said.
