R250 000 for KZNA to develop provincial athletes

2010-10-12 00:00

THE Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) yesterday donated R250 000 to KZN Athletics (KZNA) in an initiative to help it develop athletes in the province.

KZNA president Aleck Skhosana said the donation by CMA is welcome because it will help to unearth talented athletes all over the province.

“This money will develop athletes, it will help train coaches and it will help even train the managers of the athletes.”

Skhosana said the donation is the result of a long-standing relationship the athletics body has had with CMA and its passion for identifying and nurturing athletes.

“KZNA values its relationship with the CMA,” he said, adding that “not only has the Comrades helped put South Africa on to the international sporting arena, but it has certainly gone a long way in uniting South Africans of every creed and colour”.

“And now, with the CMA’s generous donation, the work of KZNA has definitely been fast-tracked,” Skhosana said.

Dave Dixon, chairperson of the CMA, said his association is happy to help nurture underprivileged athletes.

“This is a proud moment for the CMA. We share a long and meaningful history with KZNA and our financial donation is a clear manifestation of our support for KZNA’s much-needed development programme.

“It is only natural that the support we have received from KZNA over the years is reciprocated in a way that runners throughout the Zulu kingdom benefit and continue to enjoy the adrenaline-pumping sport of running,” Dixon added.
