R3,6 mln for Shaik’s flat

2007-12-12 00:00

SCHABIR Shaik’s Durban beachfront penthouse apartment was sold on auction for R3,6 million yesterday, after a bidding battle between two Durban businessmen.

The buyer did not want to divulge his name. He said: “I don’t know why you journalists are worried because this is not Schabir’s penthouse, it’s [Shaik’s wife] Zuleikha’s.”

The penthouse, apartment 2001 at Yarnigdale on the Lower Marine Parade, was not sold under an order from the master of court, as many had assumed.

Aucor auctioneers said the sale attracted a lot of interest. Representative Mary Shaw told The Witness that although the turnout at Aucor’s last auction of the year was poor, the company was certain the penthouse would sell yesterday.

Boasting panoramic views of the sea, city and Berea area, the recently renovated penthouse makes up the entire top floor of the Yarningdale building. It has three bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, a dressing room, study, two lounges, dining room, breakfast room, entertainment lounge, entrance hall, private open patio and braai area, a lift that opens to a private entrance and foyer, a staff or granny flat with its own entrance and bathroom, and two parking bays.

The unsuccessful bidder, who only identified himself as a tenant at Yarningdale, said the penthouse was “a good deal”.
